There’s exciting work happening beneath Newport Beach as we officially begin microtunneling for the Bay Bridge Pump Station and Force Mains Replacement Project. Using a specialized underground tunneling machine, named “Catalina” by the project team, crews are digging deep beneath Coast Highway and the Newport Beach Channel. Situated near the coast in Newport Beach, the Bay Bridge Project is surrounded by water, and on clear days, Catalina Island can be seen in the distance from the project area. The team wanted a name that reflected strength, water, and a connection to the local landscape, making Catalina the perfect choice.

Microtunneling is a trenchless construction method that allows crews to install pipelines underground with minimal disruption at the surface, making it an ideal solution for busy roadways and waterways. Once the tunneling is complete, two new pipelines will be installed to support OC San’s regional sewer system and continue providing reliable service to the community for years to come.
