Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) Belong in the Trash.
Sewer blockages can be a direct result of fats, oils, and grease that you may be unknowingly washing down the drain. Some people also use their kitchen sink as a trash can, allowing waste to flow into the sewer system. When trash or FOG enters the pipes, it can build up over time and create serious clogs.
These blockages can lead to hazardous sewage spills that harm the environment and disrupt service to the community.
To prevent a sewer blockage, properly dispose of fats, oils, and grease by following these simple rules:
- Never pour fats, oil, and grease down the sink or garbage disposal.
- Before washing, scrape and dry wipe pots, pans, and dishes with a paper towel.
- Mix FOG with other absorbent materials like paper towels, kitty litter, or coffee grounds, then toss in the trash.
- Pour FOG into a grease can, let it cool, and then throw it in the trash.
