The Do's and Don'ts of Flushing
It’s simple: the toilet is only meant to flush the three P's—pee, poop, and (toilet) paper. Unfortunately, over the years, people have turned it into a trash can. From wipes and sanitary products to deceased pet fish and cigarette butts, if it fits, people flush it.
Flushing the wrong items down the toilet doesn't just cause clogged pipes at home. It can also waste water (up to 5 gallons every time you flush) and create blockages in our regional sewer system. In some cases, these clogs can lead to sewer spills that harm the environment and our ocean.
Protect Your Pipes from Clog Culprits
Flushing the wrong items down the drain can lead to costly clogs, sewer backups, and even sewage spills that can harm the environment.
Common Clog Culprits:
- Sanitary products, paper towels, diapers, baby wipes and facial tissues are made of materials that don't break down and can create rag clogs in the pipes or plant equipment.
- Prescription drugs and over the counter medications contain chemicals that should not enter the wastewater supply.
- Dental floss and condoms both cause more problems than you would imagine.
- Hair always seems to make it past the plug.
- Kitty Litter (especially clay) will clog your pipes, even the ones that claim to be "flushable."
